60% of Nairobi’s population resides in informal settlements with limited or non-
existent access to electricity, water, housing, sanitation, and healthcare services among others. Most residents here rely on illegal, unreliable and hazardous electricity and water connections distributed by cartels and have become captives of these illegal suppliers.
Although the illegal services provided are affordable, they are also a death trap as reports of deaths, electrocutions, water-borne diseases and loss of property through fires continue to make headlines.
In this episode, we tell this story through the residents, victims and the cartels.
