Africa Uncensored is pleased to announce an upcoming training program on investigative journalism, focusing on conducting financial investigations.
The training program aims to equip journalists with the necessary skills and tools to conduct in-depth investigations into the management of public funds.
By participating in this training, you will gain insights into investigative journalism techniques, data analysis, and effective reporting practices, enabling you to uncover potential cases of corruption, mismanagement, and violations of public finance management principles.
Training Objectives
- Understand the key principles and ethics of investigative journalism.
- Learn investigative research methods and techniques, including data analysis and source verification.
- Acquire knowledge on relevant legal and regulatory frameworks related to public finance management.
- Develop skills for conducting interviews and gathering evidence from various sources.
- Explore approaches for presenting investigative stories effectively and ethically to maximize impact.
- Understand the role of open data and open contracting in promoting transparency and accountability.

- Three days of an intensive investigative in-person training program with expert trainers covering:
- Investigative journalism 101
- Specificities of investigating financial crime
- Story-telling techniques
- Online databases and digital tools
- Remote virtual mentoring to offer support to journalists to develop their story.
- Limited grants to conduct and publish your story.
What’s covered?
We will cover the following for accepted participants:
- All training costs.
- Transport reimbursement for participants travelling to Nairobi.
- Accommodation costs and meals
- Limited grants for story development and publication
Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists with an experience in investigative journalism or reporting on governance issues.
- Proven track record of impactful reporting or demonstrated commitment to investigative journalism.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Access to a laptop and basic data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, data visualization software).
- Application Process: To apply for the training program, please submit the following documents by 16th July 2023
- Updated CV highlighting your experience in investigative journalism and a copy of your media council press card.
- A motivation letter (max. 500 words) explaining why you are interested in attending the training and how you plan to utilize the knowledge gained.
- Two samples of your previous investigative work or reports related to governance issues (PDF format or links to online publications).

- Selected participants will be notified via email by 16th July 2023 and further details about the training program will be provided at that time.
