Africa Uncensored with the support of Oxfam in Kenya is pleased to announce a comprehensive tuition-free investigative journalist training program on Fiscal Justice and Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs).
This program aims to equip investigative journalists, with the knowledge and skills to report on fiscal injustices accurately and effectively, thereby serving as truth agents in demystifying injustices in Kenya’s economic landscape including debt, taxation, and the wastage of economic resources through IFFs and corruption.
We invite committed journalists, who have demonstrated experience in reporting on illicit financial flows to apply for this unique opportunity.

Training Dates
- Training workshop 1: 18th to 22nd December 2023
- Training workshop 2: Midyear 2024- Exact dates to be communicated
- Mentorship period: Throughout 2024 (virtual sessions)
Learning outcomes
- Develop a profound understanding of fiscal policies, taxation systems, and economic structures impacting social justice in Kenya.
- Acquire advanced skills in recognizing and investigating various forms of illicit financial flows, including corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion and avoidance.
- Gain proficiency in utilizing digital tools and technologies for financial investigations, data analysis, and storytelling in the context of financial topics.
- Benefit from virtual mentorship throughout 2024, receiving guidance and feedback to enhance skills and address challenges encountered in the field.
- Apply acquired knowledge and skills to produce high-quality investigative journalism pieces on fiscal justice and illicit financial flows.
Eligibility criteria
We are seeking applications from investigative journalists who meet the following criteria:
- At least 2-3 years of professional experience in investigative journalism, with a track record of stories on illicit financial flows.
- Strong interest in investigative journalism, public finance, and illicit financial flows. Availability and commitment to participate in the scheduled training and mentorship session scheduled from December 2023 through 2024.
- Women journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Application process
Interested journalists should submit the following by the application deadline:
- A motivation letter (not exceeding 500 words) outlining your interest in fiscal justice and illicit financial flows, and how this training will contribute to your journalistic endeavours.
- Location: Clearly state your current location in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Letter of support from your editor expressing their endorsement of your application and commitment to allowing you the necessary time to participate in the program.
Selection criteria
Applicants who meet the submission criteria and required experience will be considered. Applicants will be evaluated based on their demonstrated experience, motivation and commitment as specified in their CVs, and answers provided in the written application form.
Efforts will be made to ensure that women and men have equal opportunities for engagement as much as possible.
Preliminary logistical information
We will provide logistical and financial support for transport, and conference facilities according to Oxfam in Kenya policy guidelines for training and travel.
