The High Court, sitting in Bungoma, has temporarily suspended the implementation of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products following a petition filed by youth in Bungoma county. This provides a temporary reprieve to all Kenyans who were coming to terms with the taxation hike that went into effect at the start of September. Given the amount of debt the country has accrued and which the additional funds raised from the increased taxes were supposed to plug, in the wake of a budget deficit, is Kenya just postponing the inevitable?
