With over 30,000 Kenyans succumbing to cancer every year, 10 times the number of deaths caused by road accidents, the dreaded ailment has proven to be a thorn in the flesh of many a Kenyan family. Many deplete all their resources while seeking treatment, which doesn’t come cheap thanks to the facilities required which are hard to come by in public health institutions. Matters are compounded when the disease strikes low-income households, such as those that dot most informal settlements in the city of Nairobi and across Kenya. How do the families cope?
