About the Training

Africa Uncensored, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Regional Media Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, is pleased to invite applications for a one-week Advanced Investigative Journalism Training to be held in Mombasa, Kenya from 4th to 8th November 2025.

This intensive residential training is designed to sharpen the investigative skills of practising journalists across East Africa and beyond. Participants will work directly with experienced investigative reporters, editors, and digital forensics experts to develop and strengthen real-world stories, while building skills in data journalism, source protection, legal frameworks, and digital verification.

Training Objectives

  • Strengthen participants’ capacity to conceptualise, research, and execute high-impact investigative stories.
  • Provide hands-on training in data journalism, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and digital verification tools.
  • Equip journalists with knowledge of legal protections, safety protocols, and ethical considerations in investigative reporting.
  • Foster a regional network of investigative journalists committed to accountability journalism.
  • Support the development of at least one publishable investigative story per participant by the end of the training.

Who Should Apply

This training is targeted at:

  • Mid-career and senior journalists with a minimum of three (3) years of active reporting experience.
  • Journalists who have previously worked on or expressed interest in investigative and accountability reporting.
  • Staff reporters, freelancers, editors, and multimedia journalists actively engaged in reporting, investigative journalism or editorial leadership from print, broadcast, and digital media outlets.
  • Journalists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Somalia, and other African countries are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer

Selected participants will receive:

  • Mentorship and editorial support from leading investigative journalists.
  • Training materials, tools and digital investigative techniques. 
  • Full residential accommodation in Mombasa for the duration of the training.
  • Return travel support for participants based outside Mombasa.
  • A certificate of participation upon successful completion.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in journalism (portfolio of published work required).
  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed investigative story pitch.
  • Clarity of motivation and commitment to accountability journalism.
  • Geographic and gender diversity will be taken into account; women journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

  • A completed application form (available at the link below).
  • A current résumé or Curriculum Vitae (not exceeding 3 pages).
  • A brief investigative story pitch (300–500 words) outlining the story you wish to develop during the training — include the issue, the public interest angle, and potential sources.
  • Three (3) samples of your published investigative or accountability journalism work (links or PDFs).
  • A letter of support from your editor or media organisation (for staff journalists) or from a commissioning editor, media partner or professional referee (for freelance journalists).
