Africa Uncensored, under the Wajibu Wetu Program by ForumCiv, is excited to announce the 2025 edition of the Investigate 101-2 Training Program—a transformative opportunity for young journalists across Kenya to sharpen their investigative journalism skills and contribute to inclusive governance and human rights.
This call is anchored in the broader scope of the project titled “Journalism for Democracy,” which aims to foster social transformation through investigative storytelling, mentorship, and civic engagement.
What the Program Offers
The Investigate 101-2 Training Program empowers early-career journalists by building their capacity in investigative journalism, ethical reporting, and community-centered storytelling. Through structured mentorship and collaboration with experienced media professionals, the program strengthens connections between participants and both digital and legacy media outlets. It also supports the development and dissemination of impactful, well-researched investigative stories that highlight issues of public interest. By equipping journalists with the tools needed for civic engagement, the program contributes to advancing public accountability and promoting long-term media sustainability.
The program consists of:
A 3-Day In-Person Training (Nairobi)
The training will be led by top investigative journalists, editors, and media law experts, covering:
- Investigative Reporting Fundamentals – Techniques for identifying, researching, and validating stories
- Open Source and Digital Investigations – Leveraging tools and online research techniques
- Journalism and Media Ethics
- Safety and Security for Investigative Journalists
- Fundamentals of Story Writing
- Producing Stories for Multiple Platforms
- Story Pitching and Presentation for Publication
A 3-Month Remote Mentorship Program
Participants will be paired with experienced investigative journalists who will guide them through story development, fieldwork, and publication.
Fellowship
A select number of trainees will be invited to join a fellowship program that will support them to pursue impactful investigations aligned with democratic accountability, freedom of speech, and civic engagement. The details and timeline for this will be communicated at the end of the mentorship period.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be an early-career journalist with no more than 5 years of professional experience
- Be aged 20–35, based in Kenya
- Demonstrate interest in investigative journalism, civic engagement, or public interest reporting
- Be fluent in English (spoken and written)
- Have access to a laptop for training and reporting work
