The LAPSSET Project at Lamu Port in the Kenyan coast promised progress. In 2018, the fishermen of Lamu won one of Kenya’s most significant environmental court cases: the High Court ruled that construction of the mega-port had violated their rights and awarded them Ksh 1.76 Billion in compensation. But the ruling did not stop the sea from changing. As dredging reshaped fishing grounds, fish moved into deeper waters, fuel costs soared, and an industry that had sustained generations came under growing strain. Through the lives of fishermen, boat owners, and fish traders, Africa Uncensored’s Elsa Kariuki follows a community living with the unfinished cost of development, asking whether justice can ever be complete when the very waters people depend on are transformed and who that development ultimately serves. Watch the story of Kenya’s most controversial infrastructure project and the people who paid the price for it, on #ThePriceOfAPort.
